If you’re planning your first home fireworks show, you are probably a blend of nervous and excited. On one hand, you can’t wait to show off a bit for your friends. On the other hand, you may feel somewhat overwhelmed. Fortunately, your very first home fireworks show is nothing to be afraid of. Just follow this easy step by step guide.

1. Stay Legal

Consumer fireworks are regulated by federal, state, city, and county laws. Federal guidelines are pretty loose, banning only such heavy hitters as cherry bombs and M-80s, and some localities have no additional restrictions. However, some locales are far more restrictive. For example, Wisconsin specifically bans roman candles, skyrockets, and firecrackers, among others. Check all applicable laws, and touch base with your homeowners’ association for any additional regulations.

2. Draw Out Your Space

Use graph paper to draw out the area where you will hold the show. Note all hazards such as dry vegetation, decide which way to aim large effects, and determine where your spectators will be. You need 75 feet between spectators and small ground effects, up to 70 feet per tube inch for larger aerial effects. Cut any effects for which you simply don’t have enough room to maintain a safe perimeter.

3. Write a Budget

Before you ever head to the fireworks store, decide how much money you will spend. It is easy to get caught up in the moment and overbuy. Then divide your budget into categories. For example, you might spend 10% on novelties and small effects, 20% on the finale, etc. Read up on different types of fireworks so that you understand your options and pricing before you go.

4. Write a Plan

A soundtrack is essential if you want to theme your display. Music lets you build drama through a series of levels, from quiet moments to surging overtures. If you don’t feel ready to add sound, though, it is still important to make a plan. Decide which effects you will launch in what order to create a thrilling fireworks show. 5. Consider the Practicalities Big budget fireworks shows use computerized firing systems that perfectly sync fireworks and music, but this is way too elaborate and expensive for your first home show. Hand-firing works just fine, as long as you abide by safety precautions and rehearse at least once to make sure you know what you are doing. You can also buy a small, handheld firing device if your budget allows.

6. Stay Safe

On the day of the show, walk the designated site. Put up perimeter tape to keep spectators back. Remove all hazards, and set out a first aid kit, a bucket of water, and a fire extinguisher. Choose a long-sleeved shirt, safety glasses, and gloves if you plan to hand-fire your effects. Consider using a set of walkie-talkies if anyone will assist you with the show.

7. Watch the Weather

If there is any chance of rain between setup and go time, cover everything in zip-top bags, tarps, plastic wrap, or aluminum foil. Unwrapping your effects is a pain, but it’s far better than trying to safely get rid of soaked, never-fired fireworks.
