10 Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day for Kids

Best known today as the unofficial start of the summer season, not to mention a day for shopping and barbecues, Memorial Day actually began as a somber day of remembrance. It was originally designed to honor those fallen in the Civil War, and after World War I, it was expanded to honor the dead from all wars.

This Memorial Day, why not help your kids learn the significance behind the day by working in some time for educational activities? Here are a few ideas for celebrating Memorial Day with kids.

1. Visit a Cemetery

Although it might sound a little morbid, visiting a veterans’ cemetery or war memorial is a wonderful way to help kids connect with the meaning behind the holiday. Many National cemeteries, as well as numerous war memorials, hold special ceremonies on Memorial Day that are open to the public. Even if you can’t find a nearby ceremony, just walking through the gravesites and thinking about the people who are buried there can be highly meaningful.

2. Honor a Veteran

Although Memorial Day is specifically designed to remember the dead, it is important to honor the living as well. Veterans’ hospitals are filled with people who were injured or fell ill during their military service. Cookies, small gifts, cards, or simply the gift of time are all very much appreciated. Call ahead to ask about visiting hours.

3. Care for a Current Military Member

Another meaningful option is to do something special for someone who is currently deployed. Care packages and letters mean so much to people who are serving far from home, and are a great way to get kids involved in giving.

Note that for safety and security reasons, packages addressed to “Any Soldier” or similar are no longer accepted at US military installations. However, home front organizations that coordinate sponsorships are alive and well. Check with your local military base for details on how you can get involved.

4. Learn by Watching

The History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and similar networks are a wonderful resource for families wanting to learn more about military history. They frequently air specials around Memorial Day, so keep an eye out for programs or films that will help your family learn together.

5. Learn by Doing

Bring military history to life by participating in family craft projects, puzzles, and games. Education.com is a wonderful resource for Memorial Day projects for kids of all ages.

6. Learn by Exploring

If you live near a major battlefield, head out for a visit. Military history museums are another excellent resource that can be found in both small towns and big cities. Check your town’s website for inspiration, and then spend the day walking in the footsteps of our armed forces.

7. Research Military Medals

Do you know the difference between the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor? Are you familiar with the Silver Star? Spend the afternoon curled up at the library or on the computer learning about the different medals that are awarded to brave members of the US military.

8. Make Special Treats

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, but it is also a holiday. Why not head into the kitchen to make some fun, patriotic treats? From cakes to cookies and other delicious recipes, cooking or baking together is a great way to build some fun family memories.

9. See a Parade

For many people, Memorial Day would not be complete without seeing a parade. Many local communities host Memorial Day parades, but if you have trouble finding one, you can always stream the National parade from Washington, DC. Look for appearances by veterans and hometown heroes, as these parades expertly blend remembrance with hope for the future.

10. Celebrate with Fireworks

After paying your respects to our fallen military, don’t be afraid to kick off the summer in style with a fireworks show. Whether you head out to a local professional show or set up your own display in your backyard, fireworks are a wonderful way to cap off Memorial Day and welcome the summer season.
