How to Throw a Memorial Day Party Your Guests Will Never Forget

Memorial Day is a two-fold holiday. It is a day to remember and honor our fallen military members, and it is also the unofficial kickoff to the summer vacation season. To incorporate both elements, plan a Memorial Day party that is patriotic and respectful, but a whole lot of fun!

1. Themes

Although it is not traditionally quite as patriotic as Independence Day, you can’t go wrong with a red, white, and blue Memorial Day party. Let these colors influence everything from the decorations to the invitations and even the foods, but don’t be afraid to soften things a bit with some summery hues as well.

If your party guests include veterans, or the spouses of military members who have passed, consider collecting photos in advance. Ask each veteran or spouse for their favorite photo in full uniform, and create a tribute wall. This is a great backdrop and conversation starter, and you could even ask each veteran or spouse to say a few words before or after the meal.

Potlucks are a particularly nice way to celebrate Memorial Day, as they let everyone contribute. They also take a lot of pressure off the host, since you are responsible only for a dish or two instead of the whole event.

2. Invitations

Memorial Day parties are typically held in the backyard or around the pool, so choose casual invitations that set the tone. If you have a particular theme, be sure to state it clearly. If there will be swimming, let guests know that they should bring a swimsuit.

If you are hosting a potluck, consider assigning courses to each guest. That way, you won’t end up with 25 desserts and no appetizers or side dishes. Also consider asking someone to bring paper products, such as cups, plates, and napkins, and someone else to bring sodas or iced tea.

3. Decorations

Make your space warm, bright, and colorful. If you will have a tribute wall, place it in a prominent location where it is easy for guests to examine the photos. Streamers, balloons, and American flags are a wonderful way to convey the festive, patriotic nature of the day. If your party will last into the evening, consider using tiki torches, twinkling white light strands, and other fun accent lighting.

Spruce up the bar area as well. Consider making layered red, white, and blue drinks in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. Set out clear, non-breakable glasses that will show off the layers, and consider making a festive alcoholic or non-alcoholic punch.

4. Music

Music is an important element for any party. Think outside the box to create a memorable playlist. Try playing popular songs from the different eras during which your military veteran guests served, and mix in some patriotic favorites. If you will have a dance floor, World War II-era big band and swing can continue the Memorial Day theme.

5. Activities

The activities you choose should depend largely on the ages and interests of your guests. Memorial Day parties tend to revolve around food and companionship, so the best activities find ways to marry these ideas.

Set up an ice cream station with cones, cookies, and plenty of sprinkles and other toppings, and encourage your guests to create unusual concoctions. Slice up some watermelon and challenge your guests to an old-fashioned seed-spitting challenge.

Encourage your guests to dress in patriotic costumes, and hold a costume contest. Set up a craft station where guests can make their own kites or paper airplanes, and encourage them to compete to make the most aerodynamic version.

Of course, no Memorial Day party is complete without a fireworks show. Relax with your friends and family as you light up the night with a backyard display that reflects your personal style. Whether you are into classic aerials or the latest novelties, your guests will never forget a well-designed, themed fireworks show.
