Fireworks have been an important part of major celebrations since approximately 200 BC. By the time of the Renaissance, sophisticated fireworks shows had become the norm. Today, the basic design of fireworks has changed little, but modern technology is taking big display shows to a whole new level.

Design and Simulation
It all begins long before a single firework is launched. Computers log every detail of each and every shell, from weight, size, and color, to any relevant laws and regulations that govern its use. These details are then combined with such data as how long each shell takes to reach its full trajectory and predicted wind speed and direction. This information allows designers to plan precise, tightly timed combination effects with the assurance that they will deploy as predicted.
The next step is to use simulation software for a 3D look at exactly how the show will appear from different angles and distances. Fireworks simulations have become so accurate and so detailed that TV crews now use them to plan their coverage in advance.
Remote Firing
Rather than requiring a technician to hand-light each shell, sophisticated modern technology allows the entire show to be fired by computer. This makes it significantly easier to launch fireworks from tricky areas such as skyscraper rooftops. It also minimizes the number of technicians who are required for a large, complex show.
Multiple Soundtracks
Music is a huge part of most modern fireworks displays, but because viewers are seated or standing in different locations, plus TV broadcasts often have a delay, playing a single soundtrack may not be enough. Thanks to technology, different soundtracks can be loaded and cued, ensuring that no matter where in the world someone is viewing from, the fireworks and music will always be in sync.
Safety Considerations
Although modern fireworks are generally safe with proper handling, accidents do occasionally occur. Remote firing means that technicians are kept at a safer distance from the launching site. Computerized firing tests, which consist of sending a low-level signal to the firing wires, help to ensure that everything is connected properly and minimize the risk for duds. Redundant safety systems are built in, providing quite a few failsafes that will automatically stop the show if anything goes wrong.
Backyard fireworks displays are still an excellent way to bring people together, and will likely never go away. If you are heading out to a big professional display, though, take a few moments to appreciate the sheer magnitude of what you are witnessing. Without modern technology, and the trained professionals who know how to use it, many of the biggest and coolest effects would simply be impossible.
